| Many people are surprised to learn that chiropractors adjust children, especially newborns. This stems from the idea that chiropractors are back pain doctors and only treat people with specific injuries or aches and pains. Chiropractic is above all preventative. While children do experience many traumas to their neuromusculoskeletal systems, beginning with birth, regular chiropractic checkups and adjusting serves to spot problems early and lessen their impact, all the while keeping the nervous system at optimal function for general health, well being and development. Chiropractic pediatric care should begin soon after delivery to foster optimal spinal and nervous system growth and development. While most babies are born healthy, every baby begins their life in the world with the trauma of birth. Traveling through the birth canal serves to form the skull and influences the cranial/sacral rhythm which pumps the nutrient fluid surrounding the central nervous system. It also exerts tremendous pressure on the newborn. This pressure may cause or accentuate biomechanical issues which have occurred in utero. Breach or assisted deliveries using forceps, vacuum extraction or Cesarean extraction increase birth trauma. A chiropractic exam can determine whether or not your child can benefit from chiropractic treatment or cranial-sacral therapy. As a child grows the vertebrae grow in relation to pressure placed upon them. For this reason it is vital to insure proper vertebral position and movement as each child experiences the spinal development from the single curve of the newborn spine to the tri-curve form of the adult spine which takes place as the child learns to lift their head, crawl and walk. And let's not forget all the head bumping and falling that goes along with the process! Like chiropractic for adults, care is not limited to the spine. Once your child is up and walking we start to see all the fun filled incidents related to learning about the world, especially bikes and jungle-gyms, that can effect the limbs as well as the spine. |
